NEWARK, N.J. (April 20, 2015) – Freshman Kelly Yusko of the Rutgers-Newark softball team was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, it was announced Monday afternoon.
Yusko led R-N to a 4-4 record (2-2 NJAC) last week, as Rutgers-Newark earned a pair of conference wins over Richard Stockton Saturday, and single wins in doubleheaders against Brooklyn College and Hunter College.
In the eight games she played, the first-year Raider hit .593, piling up 16 hits in 27 at-bats and eight RBI's. She had two home runs, five runs scored and two doubles in addition to earning two wins in the circle – one of which was a complete-game five-hitter. Yusko also walked three times and currently boasts a nine-game hitting streak dating back to April 12.
The Portage, Pa. native tallied multiple hits in five of the eight games played, including three hits in three different contests. After dropping the opener to Hunter on Thursday, Yusko led the Scarlet Raiders to a win in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and six runs batted in. Then, in a 2-0 win over Brooklyn on Sunday, Yusko went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, also tossing a complete-game five-hit shutout.
For the year, Yusko already has the unofficial Rutgers-Newark record for home runs with eight and is currently hitting .469 with an unbelievable .823 slugging percentage. Of her 45 hits, 18 have been for extra bases and she has a team-high 34 RBI's and 79 total bases.
Yusko and the Scarlet Raiders will return to action Tuesday at Alumni field with an NJAC doubleheader against New Jersey City University. That opener is scheduled to get underway at 3 p.m.
