MORRISTOWN, N.J. (September 2, 2015) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team made it two-straight sweeps to open the 2015 season, hitting the road to beat the College of Saint Elizabeth, 3-0, Wednesday night.
All three sets were close as the Scarlet Raiders won by scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-22 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Saint Elizabeth falls to 0-1.
Rutgers-Newark was led by sophomore outside
Hayley Merrill who had seven kills, 14 digs and two aces. Sophomore middle
Rebecca Ford and freshman outside
Cassie Luken each picked up four kills, with Ford notching two blocks and Luken registering seven digs. Sophomore setter
Nathalie Breining had a team-best 13 assists for a Scarlet Raider squad that hit .114 in the match with 25 total kills, six aces, eight blocks and 56 digs.
Junior right side
Tabitha Davis finished with four kills and two blocks, hitting .250 in the match, while Ford hit a team-high .429 in her seven attacks. Sophomore libero
Sue Riley had a team-high 19 digs and one service ace and senior middle
Sharee Gordon had two block assists.
Leading Saint Elizabeth was Nicole Morera with 34 assists and Mikaela Gongora with 10 kills. The Eagles hit .122 but had nine more errors than the Scarlet Raiders (24-15).
Rutgers-Newark will return to action Thursday night with a match at Brooklyn College. Opening serve is set for 6 p.m.
