Nowak, Gostynski Lift Men’s Soccer to OT Win Over St. Joe's

PATCHOGUE, N.Y. (September 23, 2015) – Junior Tyler Nowak scored twice and junior midfielder Sebastian Gostynski assisted both goals as the Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team won its seventh-straight game, earning a hard-fought 2-1 double-overtime win over St. Joseph's College – L.I. Wednesday night.

With the victory, the Scarlet Raiders improve to 8-2-0. St. Joe's drops to 1-6-1.

Rutgers-Newark will visit Rowan University on Saturday afternoon looking for a key New Jersey Athletic Conference win after defeating No. 18 TCNJ in thrilling fashion to open the conference slate.

The golden goal from Nowak came in the 103rd minute of play (102:01), fielding a cross from left-to-right and scoring. It was his third goal of the year, with Gostynski getting credit for his team-leading sixth assist.

Nowak put the Raiders on top in the 42nd minute, just 3:35 before intermission. Again it was a Gostynski cross to his classmate for the finish. It was Nowak's first tally since September 2, and the fourth assist in two games for Gostynski. Nowak is the fifth Rutgers-Newark player with multiple goals this season.

The first half saw a combined seven shots on goal, four for St. Joe's and three for the Scarlet Raiders. Senior goalkeeper Matt Broomall tallied four denials in the opening 45, and Rutgers-Newark held a slim 1-0 margin in corner kicks.

Gostynski nearly scored at 33:06 as the hosts needed a team save to keep the match scoreless, and Broomall made a pair of stops to keep the Eagles off the board in the final six-plus minutes of the half.

St. Joseph's pulled even in the 61st minute, converting a corner kick from Brian Sullivan into a Justin Busto goal. It was the third corner in five minutes for the Eagles.

After the goal, neither side attempted a shot for more than 22 minutes of game time, with the Scarlet Raiders generating a pair of corners. Junior forward Charlie O'Connell ended that streak at 83:42, and junior midfielder Anthony DeRisi took a corner in the final minutes but the match headed to OT.

St. Joe's recorded no shots in the first overtime and was whistled for offside twice, as the guests generated a pair of corners and a lone shot from DeRisi. Prior to the Nowak game-winner, neither side recorded a shot in the second extra session, meaning the Golden Eagles went the final 42:40 without a single attempt.

The Scarlet Raiders finished the game with a 12-8 edge in shots and a 6-3 advantage in corners. Broomall finished the contest with four saves, and pocketed his sixth win of the season. Nowak now has six points this season on eight total shots and scored on both his attempts Wednesday night. Gostynski is now second on the team in points with 12, one behind sophomore Chigozie Atubi.
