DANBURY, Conn. (November 7, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team is headed to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Women's Volleyball Championship for the second time in three years.
Fresh off the program's first berth in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament Championship since 2006, the Scarlet Raiders will be looking extend their season to the weekend when they visit Swarthmore College in the opening round of the tournament Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Swarthmore will host two first-round matches Wednesday, and should the Scarlet Raiders get by the Garnet, they would face Neumann University or Moravian College in the tournament quarterfinals Saturday, November 12.
There are 16 teams in the 2016 ECAC Division III Women's Volleyball Championship and there will be four different four-team first-round pods. Swarthmore is the No. 1 seed in Region 2, Moravian is No. 2, Neumann is No. 3 and the Scarlet Raiders are No. 4.
The two advancing teams from each region will play Saturday at the tournament's top overall seed – Marymount University – in the tournament quarterfinals. The semifinals and final will be held Sunday, November 13.
Rutgers-Newark brings an overall record of 15-13 into the 2016 ECAC Tournament, and will be playing in the postseason tournament for the second time in three seasons. Newark advanced to the ECAC semis in 2014, and prior to that the team last won an ECAC playoff match in 2001.
Swarthmore boasts an overall record of 23-5 and will be a tough test for the Scarlet Raiders. The Garnet reached the Centennial Conference Tournament title match, falling to Johns Hopkins University, 3-2.
Recently, Rutgers-Newark juniors
Karolina Kopacz and
Sue Riley were named All-NJAC as Kopacz picked up a second-team all-league accolade, while Riley was named honorable mention All-NJAC. The pair helped the Scarlet Raiders to three league triumphs, and conference ranks of fourth or better in opponent hitting percentage, opponent kills, service aces and digs.
