ARLINGTON, Va. (February 12, 2016) - The fifth-ranked Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team earned a key Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) road win Friday, rolling to a 3-0 sweep at Marymount University.
The Scarlet Raiders - winners of two-straight matches - improve to 2-1 in the CVC and 10-1 overall. Marymount drops to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference. R-N will look to make it three-straight wins Saturday afternoon when it visits CVC rival Eastern Mennonite University at 1 p.m.
Friday night's set scores were 25-19, 25-19 and 25-21, and the Scarlet Raiders finished the evening hitting .333 and holding MU to an attacking percentage of .158.
Rutgers-Newark was led by 13 kills from senior opposite
Travis Mintzer who recorded his fifth double-digit kills performance of the season and swung a very strong .500 in the match. Mintzer added five digs and two assists to his line, and sophomore outside
Corey Pieper and junior outside
Jack Fredricks each recorded nine hammers.
Rutgers-Newark 25, Marymount 19An early 6-4 deficit did not faze the Scarlet Raiders at all as the guests embarked on a 10-3 run to open a 14-9 lead midway through the first set. Pieper, Mintzer and Fredricks all had two kills in the rally, and moments later, a 14-11 margin turned into a 21-13 lead on the back of a pair of Fredricks kills and an ace from junior middle
Nick Kuti.
Senior libero
Quocmy Nguyen set Fredricks for the set clincher as Rutgers-Newark headed to the second set up 1-0.
Rutgers-Newark 25, Marymount 19Up one early in the second (7-6), Rutgers ran off three-straight points to go on top 10-6, and back-to-back kills from Pieper sparked a 5-1 spurt to give the Raiders a 19-12 lead and all the momentum.
The hosts did not quit, going on a 6-2 rally to get within three at 21-18, but two kills from Pieper and one from Mintzer closed out the 25-19 second-set triumph.
Rutgers-Newark 25, Marymount 21On the serve of senior setter
Kevin McCandless, Rutgers-Newark began the third set with six of the first seven points. Marymount came back to get within one at 9-8, but the Scarlet Raiders ran off three-straight tallies to go back up four.
The lead swelled all the way to seven (19-12) after Kuti and Mintzer kills and a Marymount error, but the Saints clawed back with a 4-0 run to make a bid at forcing a fourth set.
Two (23-21) would be as close as the Saints would get as a Mintzer hammer and a Kuti-Pieper rejection sent Rutgers-Newark to its second consecutive conference victory and first CVC road win of the season.
Rutgers-Newark had 40 kills and just 12 errors, notching three aces, seven blocks, 38 assists and 24 digs. The Saints had 35 kills, one ace, five blocks, 34 helpers and 26 digs.
McCandless, Kuti and Pieper accounted for the Scarlet Raider aces, and Kuti (four) and Pieper (three) led Rutgers-Newark in the blocking department. Pieper, Mintzer and Nguyen all had five or more digs, and McCandless rang the bell for 28 assists and three kills. Senior middle
Cody Chidsey hit .429 in registering four kills, also notching one assist and two total blocks.
