(March 4, 2016) - Rutgers University-Newark will host the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro/Upstate Men's Basketball Championship Saturday and Sunday (March 5&6) in The Golden Dome Arena.
Rutgers-Newark earned the No. 1 seed by way of a 20-7 record and will host fourth-seeded Ithaca College in the first of two Saturday semifinals at 5:30 p.m. The Bombers reached the ECAC semis by escaping fifth-seeded Medgar Evers College, 95-94, Wednesday night in the tournament's opening round.
The winner of the Ithaca/R-N battle will take on the winner of the other Saturday semifinal between second-seeded and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival New Jersey City University and third-seeded Baruch College. NJCU knocked off Centenary College Wednesday, and the Bearcats defeated sixth-seeded Farmingdale State College.
The ECAC Metro/Upstate title game will tip-off Sunday at 3 p.m.
Rutgers-Newark has appeared in the ECAC Tournament each of the previous two seasons, reaching the semifinals in 2014 and 2015. The team's last appearance in an ECAC title game was 2011.
The Scarlet Raiders come into the weekend having won eight of their last 10 games and now boast three 20 win seasons in four years, with at least 19 wins in five of the last six.
The Rutgers-Newark defense has been strong all year, cracking the top-20 nationally in three-point field-goal percentage defense (No. 14) and field-goal percentage defense (No. 24). The Scarlet Raiders are No. 12 nationally in made free throws and No. 13 in free throws attempted, cracking the top-50 in total blocks (32nd), blocked shots per game (38th), scoring defense (42nd) and winning percentage (.741).
Individually, senior forward
Jordan McDaniel - the 2015-16 NJAC Player of the Year - breaks into the national top-50 in free throw attempts (21st), free throws made (30th), total points (31st), points per game (41st) and made field goals (46th). His 52.8 percent field-goal percentage is currently tops in the conference, with classmate
John Snow sitting No. 25 and No. 40 in the nation in free throw attempts and free throws made, respectively.
