(April 1, 2016) – The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) season opens for the Rutgers University-Newark softball team on Saturday as the Scarlet Raiders visit the Rutgers University-Camden Scarlet Raptors beginning at 2 p.m.
After starting the year 1-6, Rutgers-Newark has ripped off wins in 7-of-9 outings to head into conference play with a record of 8-8, going 4-2 at home and 4-4 in neutral site contests.
Rutgers-Camden will bring a record of 9-7 into Saturday's twinbill, winning eight of its last 11 contests dating back to March 15. Last year, the Scarlet Raptors swept the Scarlet Raiders by scores of 5-2 and 9-3 on Alumni Field in Newark.

Kelsey Lucas is No. 9 nationally and No. 1 in the NJAC in triples with four, and sophomore hurler
Morgan Walizer is ninth in the country and second in the conference in saves with two. Lucas and sophomore
Kelly Yusko are tied for 33rd in sac flies with two apiece, and sophomore
Kayla Gallo checks in 13th nationally and tops in the NJAC with .47 sacrifice hits per contest. Yusko's 61 strikeouts in the circle are 33rd in the country and second in the conference. Team-wise,
Rutgers-Newark ranks second in the NJAC in home runs per game (.31) and third in the league in double plays per game (.31). Yusko has seven multiple-hit games to lead Rutgers-Newark this year, with freshman
Samantha Hoffman and freshman
Liesel Johnson pocketing six and five respectively. Lucas (six), Yusko (five) and Gallo (four) will all bring solid hitting streaks into this weekend's contests as well.
After taking on Rutgers-Camden, Rutgers-Newark will return home for a doubleheader against Kean University, visiting NJAC foes William Paterson University and Ramapo College next.
The Scarlet Raiders are coming off an NJAC season in which they won a program-high five conference contests and are looking for a postseason berth in 2016.
