CENTER VALLEY, Pa. (September 1, 2016) – Senior
Sebastian Gostynski scored twice and freshman
Fabio De Sousa recorded his first career goal as the Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team opened the 2016 season with a 3-1 win at DeSales University on Thursday.
After trading goals just 2:52 apart early in the first half, the Scarlet Raiders took the lead for good in the 43rd minute and got some insurance midway through the second half to lock up the triumph.
With the win, Rutgers-Newark moves to 1-0-0, while DeSales drops to 0-1-0. R-N returns to the pitch Saturday at Babson College in what will be the second of eight games away from Alumni Field to start the year. The Scarlet Raiders will visit Wheaton College (Mass.) Sunday.
"It's great to start the season off with a win on the road," said Head Men's Soccer Coach
Kevin East. "We need to improve overall moving forward, but it was a good start."
DeSales generated the first three shots of the match, but it was the Scarlet Raiders taking the early lead with their first shot of the season. Newcomer
Stefano Muniz delivered a nice through-ball to Gostynski who chipped his shot up and in for the lead. It was the first point of Muniz's R-N career, and Gostynski started 2016 like he finished 2015 for Newark as he led R-N in points with 18.
DSU would answer quickly when sophomore Max Cortina tapped in a cross at 15:14, knotting things at one-all with 29:46 left in the opening period.
After the Bulldog goal, Newark would generate five of the next seven attempts, eventually pushing ahead when De Sousa found the back of the net thanks to a centering pass from junior
Alex Torres. It was the first marker of De Sousa's brief career, and the fifth career helper for Torres.
Rutgers-Newark withstood an on-target attempt and two corners in the 62nd minute before getting insurance when Gostynski tallied for the second time on a free kick. The senior tucked his shot inside the far post at 64:37 to close the scoring.
DeSales generated several corners, but the Scarlet Raider defense did not allow a shot from 61:23 to 81:08, cruising down the stretch to the two-goal road victory to begin the season.
"Credit to DeSales who came out with a lot of energy and caused some problems for us in the first half," added East. "But once we settled down and adjusted to the surface we did some good things. Both goals Sebastian (Gostynski) scored were nice, and Fabio finished his chance nicely as well."
Freshman
Andres Medina earned the start in goal for the Scarlet Raiders, picking up a win and making three saves.
Rutgers-Newark ended the match with a 20-13 margin in shots and an 11-4 edge in shots on target. The hosts held a 10-4 advantage in corners, and DSU goalie Dan Sulpizio made eight saves.
