Men’s Soccer Gets Big Road Win at Babson

BABSON PARK, Mass. (September 3, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team improved to 2-0 to start the season with a well-earned 3-2 win at Babson College Saturday afternoon on Hartwell-Rogers Field.

Three different players scored goals and four players were credited with assists as the Scarlet Raiders made it two-straight on what will end up being an eight-match road swing to open the 2016 campaign.

"It was a great result for us today," said Head Men's Soccer Coach Kevin East after the win. "Babson is a well-coach and very talented team, but I thought we were able to establish ourselves midway through the first half and build momentum from there."

Rutgers-Newark ended the match with a 20-7 edge in shots, an 8-4 margin in shots on goal and a 5-4 advantage in corners.

After Babson took a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute, the Scarlet Raiders were able to tie things up with a goal late in the first half. Junior Isaiah Kuris scored it and freshman Fabio De Sousa assisted, knotting things up with just 35 seconds on the clock. It was the second-straight game the Raiders tallied a marker late in the opening period, and the goal was Kuris' first since October 17, 2015. Kuris is one of the team's top defenders.

Babson came out of the gate strong, generating two shots and a corner in the early going, with the Raiders creating several chances in the 13th minute and holding the Beavers without a single shot from the 5:04 mark until they scored at 32:58.

Rutgers-Newark took the upper hand 15:24 into the second stanza when senior Sebastian Gostynski scored for the third time in just two matches thanks to an assist from newcomer Breno Lustosa.

The Beavers (1-1) would counter quickly with a score less than two minutes later to tie things back up, but the guests would respond just as quickly, taking the lead when De Sousa scored with assists going to Gostynski and sophomore Stefano Muniz at 63:14. De Sousa headed in the tally and it was the second assist of the year for Muniz.

Stat Fact: Of the first six goals the Scarlet Raiders scored in 2016, Sebastian Gostynski and Fabio De Sousa have had a hand in every one (scoring or assisting).

Andres Medina made two saves in goal for Rutgers-Newark, improving to 2-0 on the year. Babson keeper James Takami made five denials in defeat.

Babson was able to get off two shots after the Scarlet Raiders took the 3-2 lead, one sailing high and the other being stopped by Medina.

"We definitely took another step in the right direction today when you compare it to Thursday's match, but we still have a long way to go," added East. "Our back four played much better so I was very pleased to see that."

Rutgers-Newark will return to the field Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when it visits Wheaton College in Norton, Mass.
