Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Rob Kulish

Men’s Soccer Blanks Keystone; R-N Now 5-1-0

EWING, N.J. (September 11, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team improved to 5-1-0 with a 3-0 shutout of Keystone College (1-2-1) Sunday in The College of New Jersey Adidas Soccer Classic in Ewing. The Scarlet Raiders won the tournament thanks to a flawless 2-0-0 record, topping nationally-ranked Whitworth College Saturday ahead of Sunday's win. They compiled six points compared to three for both host TCNJ and Whitworth.

Rutgers-Newark has now won 5-of-6 matches to start the season and has done so without playing a single game on its home turf, going 3-1 in road contests and 2-0 on neutral site contests.

Junior Isaiah Kuris gave R-N the lead when he banged home a rebound off the crossbar in the eighth minute, and Rutgers-Newark never looked back in getting its first shutout of 2016. The tally was Kuris' third of the year.

The Scarlet Raiders dominated the action from start-to-finish, outshooting Keystone 28-2 and ending with an 11-4 margin in corners. Rutgers-Newark did not allow a single shot on goal in the game, while putting nearly half of its shots on target (12-of-28).

Did you know? In both games of the TCNJ Adidas Soccer Classic Rutgers-Newark scored a goal less than eight minutes into the action. Stefano Muniz Saturday and Kuris on Sunday.

The only offense KC was able to muster in the first half were two corners sandwiched around a shot from 18:30-20:22, but the Giants were able to stay in the game because five first-half saves from freshman goalkeeper Malcolm Moreira.

After taking a 1-0 lead into intermission, the Scarlet Raiders punched in some insurance in the 62nd minute when freshman Fabio De Sousa rang the bell for the third time this season. The rookie took a pass from senior tri-captain Dylan Elias and drilled his shot from just inside the box. De Sousa now has eight points on the season, and the assist was the first of 2016 for Elias.

The final marker of the game came at 72:04 when sophomore Timothy Farias scored his first of the year, rushing up the left side before blasting a beauty into the upper-corner.

Rutgers-Newark limited Keystone chances throughout, not allowing a single opponent shot in the second half until 35:06 had come off the clock.

Freshman Andres Medina breezed to the win in goal, earning his fifth individual triumph against just one defeat. The newcomer now has a goals-against average of just 1.00, making 28 saves and allowing just six tallies against.

Now 75 percent through a brutal eight-match stretch without a home game to start the season, Rutgers-Newark will return to the pitch September 14 at Mount Saint Mary College in the team's final tuneup for New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play which opens next Saturday at Rutgers University-Camden.

Stingy: Rutgers-Newark won by shutout for the first time this season on Sunday, but the Scarlet Raider defense has been stingy throughout the entire season. R-N has allowed multiple goals against just once (a 3-2 win over Babson College) and has allowed one goal or less five times.
