Men’s Soccer Falls in NJAC Opener at Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (September 17, 2016) – Rutgers University-Camden topped Rutgers University-Newark by a score of 3-0 in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) men's soccer match at Rutgers-Camden Community Park Saturday.
 
The Scarlet Raptors scored three second-half goals to pick up the league win, improving to 4-0-2 overall and 1-0-0 in the conference. Rutgers-Newark saw its four-match winning streak snapped, falling to 6-2-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the NJAC.
 
Rutgers-Newark – who opened the season with eight consecutive road contests – will return to the field Monday night at 8 p.m. when it hosts John Jay College as part of Soccer Fest 2016. All fans in attendance will receive a commemorative t-shirt and free pizza will be served after the women's soccer match at approximately 7:45 p.m.
 
Junior Brad Maine scored twice for the hosts 8:38 apart in the second half for a 2-0 lead, and junior Shane Guyer recorded the final tally for Camden with 38 seconds left.
 
Rutgers-Newark controlled the stat sheet in the first half, ending the period with a 7-2 margin in shots. The Scarlet Raiders finished with a 19-12 lead in shots, and each team put eight bids on target.
 
R-N had five early attempts with a rip from sophomore Breno Lustosa hammering the crossbar at 17:01 as Newark placed four first-half attempts on target.
 
Lustosa hit the crossbar again early in the second, with Camden taking the lead for good at 54:22. The Scarlet Raiders would nearly tie the match at one after a corner, but a Rutgers-Camden defender cleared a Brandon Goldy shot off the goal line.
 
Camden goalie James Brett made eight saves, while Scarlet Raider freshman Andres Medina made five stops. Brett improved to 4-0-2 with his third shutout, and Medina fell to 5-2-0.
 
Senior tri-captain Dylan Elias led the Scarlet Raiders with three shots on target as Newark finished the afternoon with a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
