NEWARK, N.J. (September 26, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team rolled to an 8-0 shutout of St. Joseph's College- Long Island Monday night on Alumni Field in Newark.
The win is the third-straight for the Scarlet Raiders who are now 9-2-0 overall. St. Joe's falls to 2-6-0 with the loss. R-N will visit New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rival New Jersey City University Wednesday in its next match.
The Scarlet Raiders scored early and often and were led by senior
Sebastian Gostynski who had three goals, and freshman
Romario DePalmer who had three assists and a goal. Freshman
Yannick Ntone also scored twice for Newark.
The shutout was the second in three matches for Rutgers as the Scarlet Raiders outscored their opponents 13-1 on their three-match home stand.
Gostysnki and DePalmer got Rutgers-Newark off to an incredible start, hooking up for a pair of goals just 22 seconds apart in the third minute of action. On the first, DePalmer crossed to an open Gostynski who one-timed his attempt in the left side of the goal. On the second, DePalmer found Gostynski with a through-ball and the veteran capitalized for the Scarlet Raiders. The two helpers were the first points of DePalmer's career at Rutgers-Newark.
DePalmer then tallied for the first time in his career at 17:04, taking a cross from Gostynski and heading the initial chance off the crossbar before scoring on his own rebound.
De Palmer and Gostynski hooked up for the third time in the match at 23:06 when Gostynski chased down a through-ball in the left side of the box and placed his shot in the lower-right corner for his seventh marker of the season.
Sophomore
Victor Navas Jr. fed junior
Chigozie Atubi for his second tally of the season in the 25th minute, and the lead moved to 6-0 when junior
Yannick Ntone scored his first career goal after a cross from freshman
Kieran Williams. Williams picked up the assist on the play which put a cap on the first-half scoring.
Freshman goalkeeper
Matt Cabrera made three saves in the first half, making one spectacular denial on a deep shot from senior Brian O'Sullivan.
Sophomore
Mark Glodava – who came on to start the second half – made a beautiful save on a rip early in the second to keep the Golden Eagles scoreless.
Ntone scored for the second time, putting in his own rebound for a 7-0 lead, and junior
Alex Torres and freshman
Benjamin Parris played a gorgeous game of give-and-go resulting in Torres' second tally of the season and Parris' first career assist.
Three goalkeepers – Cabrera, Glodava and senior
Elmer Flores – combined to make six saves in pitching the team's fourth shutout of the year. Cabrera was credited with the win.
Rutgers-Newark finished the match with an 18-12 margin in shots and an 11-6 edge in shots on goal. Each side took two corners.
