Men’s Soccer Blanks NJCU for NJAC Road Win

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (September 28, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team earned a 2-0 shutout victory over New Jersey City University Wednesday afternoon in a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) road match at Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.

The Scarlet Raiders – who played for the third time in five days – improve to 10-2-0 overall and 2-1-0 in the league, while NJCU drops to 0-3-0 in the NJAC and 8-3-1 overall. Rutgers-Newark picked up its second-straight and fifth overall shutout of the season and has now allowed one goal or less in 10-of-12 outings this season.

R-N will return to action at The College of New Jersey Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Freshman Andres Medina made his 10th start in goal for the Scarlet Raiders, improving to 10-2-0 and pocketing his second individual shutout. He made several gorgeous saves and was credited with four denials on the afternoon.

Rutgers-Newark scored one marker in the first half and one in the second. Sophomore Breno Lustosa was credited with the game-winner in the 28th minute when he found the back of the net with a diving header on a corner kick from freshman Fabio De Sousa. It was the first goal as a Scarlet Raider for Lustosa, and De Sousa was credited with his team-high sixth assist on the play.

De Sousa gave the Scarlet Raiders some much-needed insurance in the 58th minute, and he was setup by senior Dylan Elias. Elias made a run from the right win and found De Sousa streaking into the box for the marker. It was the seventh goal of the season for De Sousa who now has at least two points in three-straight matches and one point in nine of the 11 games he has played. The assist was the second of the year for Elias.

After the Scarlet Raiders' second score of the game, NJCU was only able to generate two shots on target over the final 33:32 of game time. In total, Rutgers-Newark finished with a 19-14 edge in shots, and the Scarlet Raiders doubled up the Gothic Knights in shots on goal (10-5) and corner kicks (6-3).

Medina made a diving save in the 16th minute to keep the match scoreless, and again went horizontal for a stop at 70:44 to keep his sheet clean.

The entire Rutgers-Newark defense and midfield did a splendid job keeping the Gothic Knights off the board on what was an incredibly unpredictable and uneven surface in Jersey City. Prior to its last match, NJCU had scored two goals or more in every game but one this season, scoring three times or more in six different outings.

NOTE: Rutgers-Newark is now 7-2-0 away from Alumni Field in 2016, while going 3-0-0 in home matches. The Scarlet Raiders will be playing at TCNJ for the second time this season after beating nationally-ranked Whitworth University and Keystone College in the TCNJ Adidas Soccer Classic on September 10 & 11.
