RIVERDALE, N.Y. (September 6, 2016) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team ran its record to 3-0 with a 3-1 win at the College of Mount Saint Vincent Tuesday night in Riverdale.
The set scores were 25-20, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-18.
The Scarlet Raiders were led by juniors
Karolina Kopacz and
Morgan Schweitzer who each finished with double-digit kills on the night. Kopacz picked up another double-double, dishing out 18 assists and hammering home 15 kills, also tallying five service aces and three blocks. Schweitzer also had a double-double in putting down 11 kills and tallying a team-high 21 digs. Sophomore
Cassie Luken had eight kills, 13 digs and two aces, while junior
Sue Riley had 18 digs and five aces. Senior
Kathy Hormaza accounted for the third double-double of the match for Newark, notching a team-high 19 assists and 12 digs.
Rutgers-Newark will look to make it four-straight wins Thursday when the Raiders head to the College of New Rochelle for a 7 p.m. opening serve.
Rutgers-Newark 25, CMSV 20
The Scarlet Raiders were able to take a 1-0 lead in the match with a solid first set. A pair of aces for Schweitzer in a 5-0 run helped R-N to a 6-1 edge, and after the Dolphins came back to tie at 11, a 4-0 rally featuring kills from Kopacz (two) and Schweitzer made it 15-11. The hosts would get within three (15-12), but the Scarlet Raiders extended, leading by as many as seven (23-16) and closing things out after a CMSV service error.
Rutgers-Newark 25, CMSV 20
The two sides traded tallies to start, before a run from Mount Saint Vincent gave the hosts a 7-5 lead. Newark responded with a 6-1 run to take an 11-8 edge, and after the Dolphins got within one at 12-11, three-straight aces from junior
Sue Riley in a 6-0 spurt made it 18-11 in favor of the guests.
The Dolphins did a nice job battling, trimming the lead to one (18-17), but the Scarlet Raiders outscored CMSV 7-3 down the stretch to take a 2-0 lead in the match. A Kopacz kill brought up set point, before a Kopacz ace closed the door.
CMSV 25, Rutgers-Newark 22
Mount Saint Vincent extended the match in the third, erasing defcits of 11-7 and 15-11 to tie the score at 19-all. Rutgers-Newark received back-to-back kills from Luken and Kopacz to go back on top by two (22-20), but the Dolphins closed the set on a 5-0 run to force a fourth set.
Rutgers-Newark 25, CMSV 18
The Scarlet Raiders doubled up CMSV early, taking an 8-4 lead, but the Dolphins answered, tying the score at 11. The hosts went up 15-13, and this time Newark came right back to tie at 15 thanks to a CMSV error and Kopacz kill, eventually going on top by one at 16-15 on the back of a hammer from Schweitzer.
Mount Saint Vincent would tie at 16, but a 4-0 run from Rutgers-Newark stole the momentum as Kopacz picked up a kill and an ace for the Raiders. The rally would continue for the Scarlet Raiders after a Dolphin timeout. A Kopacz ace made it 23-16 and a Schweitzer kill brought up match point, and the Scarlet Raiders eventually closed it out when Kopacz set Schweitzer for the clincher.
Rutgers-Newark finished the match with 44 kills and a hitting percentage of .113, tallying 63 points, 15 aces, four total blocks, 42 assists and 86 digs. CMSV hit .079 and had 36 kills.
