NEWARK, N.J. (October 19, 2017) – Thursday night, the Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team took on visiting Farmingdale State College in a non-conference matchup in The Golden Dome. The visitors won 3-0 by set scores of 25-23, 25-15, and 25-18 to improve to 15-7 on the season. The Scarlet Raiders fall to 8-14 overall.
Rutgers-Newark was led by senior
Morgan Schweitzer and junior
Cassie Luken who each racked up 11 kills. Schweitzer posted a near double-double with nine digs while senior
Sue Riley recorded a match-best 23 digs. Rookie
Karly Gregoire had a match-high 28 assists.
A closely contested first set saw the two sides deadlock nine times while the lead changed hands nine times as well. Neither squad led by more than four and it was the Scarlet Raiders who earned that edge when a kill by senior
Rebecca Ford made it 16-12. Still, the visitors rallied and turned a 21-21 tie into a tight 25-23 win.
Farmingdale jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead but R-N reeled off four consecutive points sparked by a kill from Luken to earn a 5-4 edge. Unfortunately, the visitors would rebound to win the next five points and claim an advantage that they would not relinquish. The Rams expanded their lead to as large as 10 before taking the 25-15 victory.
In the third stanza, the two teams went back-and-forth as they had five lead changes and five ties. Trailing 18-15, the Scarlet Raiders won three straight points including kills by Schweitzer and Riley but that was as close as the home side would get. The Rams reeled off the final seven points of the contest to take the set 25-18 and the match 3-0.
Rutgers-Newark completes its three-match home-stand Friday night against non-conference opponent CCNY at 7 p.m. in The Golden Dome.
