Women's Volleyball Races Past Visiting CCNY

NEWARK, N.J. (October 20, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team closed out its three match home-stand tonight with a sweep of non-conference foe the City College of New York, 3-0. The Scarlet Raiders cruised to wins of 25-16, 25-17, and 25-15 as they improve to 9-14. The Beavers fall to 3-18 on the season.

Rutgers-Newark was led by senior Rebecca Ford who racked up a season-high 10 kills and added two blocks. Senior Sue Riley recorded a match-high 29 digs and four aces while rookie Karly Gregoire had a match-best 25 assists and contributed three aces. Meanwhile, sophomore Natalie Cordero earned her first ace and digs of the season while freshman Dorcas Owusu collected her first collegiate digs.

In the first set, the teams went back-and-forth early but the Scarlet Raiders managed to extend an 11-9 edge into a 16-9 lead behind a kill from sophomore Comfort Akinbo and a block by Akinbo and rookie Samantha Kemmerer. The home side continued to expand that advantage to as large as 23-14 before closing out the stanza 25-16.

The second set followed a similar theme as R-N held a slim 9-8 advantage but quickly expanded that lead by reeling off six straight points featuring a pair of Gregoire aces and a kill by senior Morgan Schweitzer. The Scarlet Raiders led by as many as nine and capped the 25-17 win with another Gregoire ace.

Rutgers-Newark continued its momentum into the final set, breaking open a 3-3 deadlock and gaining an 11-4 lead behind aces from Riley and senior Chrissy Campanelli, a pair of kills from Ford, and a kill by junior Cassie Luken. While the visitors closed to within 13-10, the Scarlet Raiders ended the set and the match on a dominating 12-2 surge, punctuated by yet another Ford kill to deliver the 25-15 win in the stanza and 3-0 victory for the match.

Rutgers-Newark returns to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play on Tuesday night when they head to Stockton for a 7 p.m. contest.
