Women's Volleyball Swept at NJAC Foe Stockton

GALLOWAY, N.J. (October 24, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team traveled to New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe Stockton University for a league showdown tonight. The Ospreys swept the visiting Scarlet Raiders by set scores of 25-13, 25-12, and 25-11. Rutgers-Newark falls to 9-15 (1-7 NJAC) while Stockton improves to 20-9 (6-2 NJAC).

The Scarlet Raiders were led by sophomore Comfort Akinbo with eight kills while senior Sue Riley added 18 digs and rookie Karly Gregoire had 16 assists.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action for its regular season home finale on Thursday when they take on Cairn University at 7 p.m. in non-conference play.

In the opening set, the visitors stayed close in the early going and were within 10-8 following a kill by Akinbo. From that point on, the Ospreys took control winning 10 of the next 11 points to create a double-digit advantage en route to a 25-13 victory.

The home side raced out to an insurmountable 16-3 edge in the second stanza. While the Scarlet Raiders fought back and cut their deficit to 22-12 on a spike from rookie Samantha Kemmerer, Stockton won the last three points of the set to earn a 25-12 win.

The third set followed a similar pattern to the second as the Ospreys again took charge early and built their lead to a wide 17-4 margin. R-N won seven of the next 13 points capped by another kill by Kemmerer but it would not be enough as Stockton completed the sweep with a 25-11 win.
