Women’s Volleyball Sweeps Cairn on Senior Night

NEWARK, N.J. (October 26, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team rolled to a 3-0 sweep of Cairn University on Senior Night in The Golden Dome. The set scores were 25-14, 25-6 and 25-18.

Prior to the match, the Scarlet Raiders honored five seniors playing in front of their home crowd for the final time; Chrissy Campanelli, Rebecca Ford, Sue Riley, Morgan Schweitzer and Sue Son.

Rutgers-Newark improves to 10-15 overall and will travel to the College of Staten Island Friday in its 2017 finale. Cairn drops to 6-18.

Leading the Scarlet Raider offense was Schweitzer and sophomore Comfort Akinbo who combined for 23 kills. Akinbo hit a lofty .533 as Rutgers-Newark finished the match with a .302 attacking percentage on 38 kills. Campanelli delivered a sparkling six service aces, and Riley lifted 18 digs. She now has 1,991 digs in her career. After honoring their seniors, the Scarlet Raiders came to play, ripping off 12-of-16 to start the match. Campanelli notched an ace and R-N received a Ford-Samantha Kemmerer block along with multiple kills from Akinbo and Schweitzer.

The lead swelled to 10 (18-8) after a Highlander error, and an ace from Riley locked down the 1-0 lead.

Rutgers-Newark 25, Cairn 6
The second set began much like the first as Rutgers scored 4-of-5 for an early 4-1 advantage. A monster spike from Luken staked Newark to a 9-4 edge and forced a Cairn timeout, and a marvelous run of serving from Campanelli featuring three aces made it a 19-6 set.

After another timeout, Campanelli kept it rolling, delivering two more aces on the way to a 25-6 set win. Schweitzer delivered the clincher as Rutgers-Newark ended the set on a 15-0 run.

Nicer! R-N hit .455 in the second set.

Rutgers-Newark 25, Cairn 18
A Schweitzer ace and Ford winner put Rutgers-Newark up 5-2 early in the set, with an Akinbo winner ending a Cairn rally and giving the Raiders a 12-9 advantage. Back-to-back hammers from Schweitzer upped the edge to five, but the Highlanders hung tough, getting within one at 18-17.

Kills from Akinbo and Luken created some distance between the two sides and back-to-back-to-back kills from Schweitzer locked down the win.

Nicest! The Scarlet Raiders recorded 17 kills as a team in the third set.

R-N ended the action with 52 points on 38 kills, 11 aces and three rejections. The Raiders totaled 36 assists and 41 digs. Cairn notched 20 points via 15 winners, four aces and a block.
