GALLOWAY N.J. (October 7, 2017) – Behind five points from senior forward
Chigozie Atubi, the nationally-ranked No. 8 Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team rolled to a 4-1 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) win at Stockton University Saturday afternoon at G. Larry James Stadium.
Rutgers-Newark scored twice in the first 12 minutes and never looked back, improving to 14-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in the conference. Stockton drops to 2-3-0 in the conference and 10-3-1 overall.
The Scarlet Raiders have not dropped an NJAC match since September of the 2016 season, and have now won two-straight games since suffering their first loss of 2017. Newark will look for a third-straight triumph Wednesday night when it hosts league rival Ramapo College. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. from Alumni Field.
NJAC Standings
After Stockton took the first shot of the match, Rutgers-Newark wasted little time in taking the lead. Junior
Stefano Muniz scored it and classmate
Breno Lustosa assisted with the former banging home a cross from the latter. The marker was the sixth of the year for Muniz, while Lustosa registered his second helper.
Atubi put Rutgers-Newark up 2-0 in the 12th minute when he tallied for the fifth time this season, turning an Osprey turnover into a score.
Facing a two-goal deficit, the hosts were able to get on the board, trimming the Rutgers-Newark lead to one (2-1) at 24:41 when Christian Bik headed home a corner off the foot of Eucario Solano.
Following the host goal, each side generated several other attempts, but the score remained 2-1 in favor of Rutgers heading into the intermission.
The Scarlet Raiders ended the first half with a 10-6 margin in shots and a 6-3 lead in shots on goal, while Stockton held a 2-1 edge in corners.
Just 8:30 into the second stanza, Atubi struck again, scoring for the second time in the match. The veteran broke through the Osprey defense and put home his sixth goal of the season.
The Ospreys were able to create several corners following Atubi's second, but the Scarlet Raider defense hung tough, withstanding the flurry and keeping the two-goal advantage.
Atubi's fifth point of the match came via an assist, setting up senior midfielder
Hubert Dul for the final goal of the match. Dul took his fellow-senior's feed and delivered a tally into the lower-right for his fourth score of the season. The assist was the third of the year for Atubi.
Rutgers-Newark ended the match with a 20-12 margin in shots and a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal. Scarlet Raider sophomore goalkeeper
Andres Medina made four saves to earn his 15th win of the season. Stockton ended the match with a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Scarlet Raiders last suffered a regular-season conference loss back on September 17, 2016. Since then, R-N has ripped off 13-straight NJAC victories. In their five league wins this season, the Scarlet Raiders have outscored the opposition by a 14-3 margin. For 2017 as a whole, Rutgers-Newark has a plus-38 goal differential (44-6) in 15 outings.
