NEWARK, N.J. (December 12, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team will host New York University in the team's final game of the first semester Friday night in The Golden Dome.
The Scarlet Raiders will bring a record of 5-5 into Friday's action, and they are hoping to snap a brief two-game skid to finish the pre-holiday portion of the 2017-18 slate above .500.
As a team, Rutgers-Newark cracks the top-50 in a variety of statistical categories – many on the defensive side of the ball. The Scarlet Raiders' best national rank comes in the form of steals as they check in 13th with 129. R-N is also one of the top rebounding teams in the nation, sitting 17th with 422 to date. Newark is 22nd in free throw attempts (197), 28th in turnovers forced per game (25.30) and 29th in scoring defense, allowing a stingy 51.3 points per game. The team's plus-6.80 turnover margin is 35th in the nation and Rutgers' 12.9 steals per game are 40th. The Scarlet Raiders pace the New Jersey Athletic Conference in offensive rebounds per game (16), total rebounds, scoring defense and turnover margin.
Individually, junior guard
Faith Ashby sits atop the conference and third in the nation in steals with 46, while her 4.60 steals per game are seventh in the country. Ashby is sixth in field goals attempted and seventh in field goals made, sitting 19th in assists (46) and 21st in total points (166). Lastly, Ashby is 28th in minutes played (327), while her sister – sophomore
Hannah Ashby – ranks 40th in that same stat (317). The pairing is second and fourth in the NJAC.
