NEWARK, N.J. (February 1, 2017) – In January of 2016, the Rutgers University-Newark women's basketball team adopted young Hedda Siverttson through the
Friends of Jaclyn Foundation. On Saturday night, the Scarlet Raiders will be hosting #TEAMHEDDA night in The Golden Dome for the men's and women's basketball New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader against William Paterson University.
The Scarlet Raider women get things started at 6 p.m., and the men battle the Pioneers at 8 p.m. Rutgers-Newark will be donating all admission proceeds from the games to Hedda and her family, and will also be collecting donations throughout the week (and on Saturday night) for additional support.
In October, Hedda received what was thought to be her final chemotherapy treatment, however, since then another tumor was discovered and she was forced to have brain surgery. Hedda was given the OK to go home in late-January, but she will be bedridden and recovering for the near-future.
Around her hometown of Morristown, N.J., friends, family and supporters have been tying turquoise ribbons around trees and statues in support of Hedda - turquoise is the youngsters favorite color.
R-N women's basketball will be tabling at the Paul Robeson Campus Center all week, collecting donations and giving out ribbons, and players on both the men's and women's teams will be wearing turquoise shirts to show support Saturday night.
Those interested in making a donation or picking up a ribbon can contact anyone on the Rutgers-Newark women's basketball team, or stop by the women's basketball office in The Golden Dome Athletic Center. Community members can also visit the
Helping Hedda Website.
