No. 11 Alvernia Tops Baseball in Slugfest, 20-15

READING, Pa. (April 11, 2017) –
The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team was topped by nationally-ranked No. 11 Alvernia University Tuesday afternoon in a 20-15 slugfest at Angelic Park.
 
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for Rutgers-Newark as the Scarlet Raiders fall to 15-6 on the season. Alvernia improves to 21-4-1, and the two teams will play Wednesday afternoon at Kean University in Union, N.J. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. and live stats will be available.
 
Rutgers-Newark scored four runs in the first inning and one more in the second to take a 5-0 lead, but Alvernia responded with seven markers in the second and single tallies in the third and fourth to go on top 9-5.
 
The Scarlet Raiders rallied back, scoring eight times in the fifth to open a 13-9 advantage. Junior Anthony Perconte doubled home junior Brian Boulineau for the first run of the inning, and freshman Colin Powers was next with a run-scoring single to center field. Freshman Connor Clare then drove in Perconte to make it a 9-8 game.

The equalizer and lead run crossed on a pair of wild pitches, with sophomore Ryan Zucker coming through next with an RBI base hit. Boulineau capped the inning's scoring with a two-run single to left for runs 12 and 13.
 
Alvernia scored three times in the bottom half of the inning to get within one (13-12), but another two-run single from Boulineau made it a 15-12 contest after the top of the seventh.
 
The Crusaders went on to score the final eight runs in the game, scoring four times on three hits in the seventh to take the lead for good.
 
Boulineau led the Rutgers-Newark offense, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Perconte went 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, and Zucker was 2-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Freshman JC Ball went 2-for-4 with three runs, and junior Adam Tricarico blasted a two-run shot in the first inning. Junior Justin Marks scored three runs and a hit as Rutgers-Newark finished the game with 13 knocks in the game.
 
Junior Ben Dubas led Alvernia, driving in eight runs via a triple and a home, and sophomore Nathan Sides went 5-for-6 with four RBI and three runs scored.
