Sue Riley of the Rutgers University-Newark women's volleyball team was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Week for the second-straight week, it was announced Monday night by the league office.
Riley helped the Scarlet Raiders to a pair of wins as Rutgers-Newark (4-4) went 2-2 overall.
Riley averaged 5.57 digs per set whiling adding nine kills, six assists and five aces to her line. The veteran posted 24 digs in three sets at Rowan, and tallied 25 more in a five-set loss to Mt. Ida.
The Rahway native registered a season-high eight kills and a hitting percentage of .467 in the R-N sweep of Lehman, and she lifted 18 digs in the Scarlet Raiders sweep of Sage on Saturday.
Riley has put together an incredibly impressive start to the 2017 season, ranking first in the conference and eighth in the nation with 6.57 digs per set.
She earned NJAC and Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Defensive Player of the Week honors last week, and has eclipsed 23 digs five times in eight matches to date.
Riley and the rest of the Scarlet Raiders return to the courts Tuesday night with an NJAC match at New Jersey City University. Rutgers-Newark returns to the Brick City Thursday night for a league match against Montclair State University.
