No. 8 Men's Soccer Blanks RIT; Scarlet Raiders Move to 2-0

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (September 2, 2017) – The eighth-ranked Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team toppled host Rochester Institute of Technology by a score of 2-0 Saturday afternoon in Rochester in the final match of the Doug May Memorial Tournament.

Rutgers-Newark improves to 2-0-0 and has yet to allow a goal in 2017. RIT drops to 0-2-0. R-N will open its home schedule Wednesday night on Alumni Field against CCNY. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.

The two sides would trade early shots before a flurry of chances for the Scarlet Raiders over a 100-second span in the seventh minute. Senior Chigozie Atubi hit the post and was denied on another attempt, senior Arek Szoldrowski had a header saved and the Raiders generated a pair of corners.

Rutgers-Newark continued to press, eventually breaking through when sophomore Fabio De Sousa converted a penalty kick into a 1-0 edge.

The Scarlet Raiders kept at it, peppering RIT keeper Peter Cinibulk with shots, forcing him to make five saves in the first half as R-N had a 12-3 margin in attempts and a 6-2 edge in shots on target at the break. Each team took three corners.

Early in the second half, Atubi scored for the second time in as many days, using assists from De Sousa and senior Hubert Dul on the play to give Rutgers a 2-0 lead at 51:54.

The Scarlet Raiders opened the final 45 by taking nine of the first 11 shots, holding possession and field position for long stretches of play. R-N's dominance continued as the defense did not allow a shot on goal for the entirety of the second half.

Sophomore goalkeeper Andres Medina made two saves and picked up his first individual shutout of the season.

R-N ended things with a 12-2 margin in shots on goal and a 22-7 advantage in total attempts, while RIT had a 6-5 edge in corners. The Tigers were led by 10 saves from Cinibulk.
