Rutgers-Newark is 1-0-0 in the conference and 6-2-0 overall. The Scarlet Raiders topped Rutgers University-Camden in their NJAC opener, but saw a five-match winning streak come to an end Tuesday night against Salisbury University.
The Cougars come into Saturday night playing well, having won five straight matches. They topped Stockton University in overtime on Saturday and defeated the College of Staten Island Wednesday.
Kean has taken the last two meetings from the Scarlet Raiders, with the two squads playing to a draw in 2014.
Coach Ruela's Keys to the Game:
1. We will need to be sharp defensively, recognizing the cues of when to drop and absorb the long ball and when to play touch tight and force them back.
2. Work rate will have to be high – challenging 50/50 balls, maintaining possession and finishing runs.
3. It will be important that we are composed in the attacking third and finish our chances.
After what was a tough 2016 season, Rutgers-Newark has been playing solid soccer all season long. The team has a plus-15 goal differential and is allowing less than one goal per game. Rutgers-Newark is plus-35 in shots taken and has already generated 19 more corners than the opposition (47-28).
A balanced offense, Rutgers-Newark has five players with multiple goals. Junior
Juliana Ceballos and senior
Haley Savva each have five markers, while senior
Nicole Gomez and senior
Sabrina Solorzano have four apiece. Ceballos leads the team with seven assists and 17 total points, tallying three game-winners already.
The Scarlet Raiders currently lead the NJAC in total goals and total points, checking in second with 2.75 tallies per game and 7.00 points per game. Ceballos tops the NJAC leaderboard in assists per game, game-winning goals, points per game, total assists and total points, while senior goalkeeper
Diana Carvalho is third in the league in save percentage at .788.
