BUFFALO, N.Y. (September 8, 2017) – The Rutgers-University Newark women's soccer team heads to Buffalo, N.Y. for a tournament over the weekend where they will take on host Buffalo State Friday afternoon and Baldwin Wallace on Saturday.
The Scarlet Raiders head into the weekend's contests with a 2-1 record and a pair of overtime contests in their last two matches.
Rutgers-Newark dropped an overtime thriller at home against Cortland State 3-2 on Sunday before rebounding for an extra time victory at St. Joe's-L.I., 2-1 on Wednesday night.
R-N has demonstrated an early nose for goal in head coach
Ariana Ruela's third season at the helm, netting nine scores in three contests.
The Scarlet Raiders have been led by senior
Nicole Gomez who has racked up a team-best eight points on three goals and two assists. Gomez earned five of those points with a brace and helper during her squad's season-opening 5-0 victory against Mount Saint Vincent. The veteran followed up that appearance with an assist and the game-winning goal in the 98th minute on the road on Wednesday.
R-N has also featured junior
Juliana Ceballos who netted two scores in her first match and has added a pair of assists for six points while senior
Sabrina Solorzano contributed two scores and an assist, good for five points and third on the squad.
On Friday afternoon, the Scarlet Raiders face a tough test in the defending 2016 regular season and postseason State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) champions, Buffalo State. The Bengals went 17-1-3 last season, finishing the campaign on an unprecedented 16-match unbeaten streak that was extended to 17 in their 2017 season. Still, the Bengals enter their tournament following a 3-0 defeat at Western Connecticut State.
Saturday afternoon sees Rutgers-Newark take on Baldwin Wallace. The Yellow Jackets began their 2017 season at the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament hosted by Penn State-Behrend and emerged victorious in both of their matches. However, they traveled to Oberlin shortly after that excursion and suffered their first defeat of 2017 to head into the Bengals Classic with a 2-1 record.
Keys From Coach Ruela:
Facing tough competition in short order, we are looking forward to an opportunity to continue their improvement. R-N is ready to fight and play its best matches yet. It will be important that we clean it up defensively: staying compact, organized, aggressive, and making the opponents play predictable. We have to continue to work on being patient in the attack and finishing our chances. We are excited to see what we can produce this week against two quality sides.
