Men's Soccer Drops NJAC Match vs Rowan

NEWARK, N.J. (October 13, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team was defeated tonight in New Jersey Athletic Conference play by visiting rival Rowan University on Frederick Douglass Field, 4-0. The Scarlet Raiders fall to 7-8-1 (2-5-0 NJAC) while the Profs improve to 10-4-0 (4-2-0 NJAC).

The visitors outshot R-N 28-7, including 16-4 in attempts on frame, while holding a 9-4 edge in corners.

The Raiders' rookie keeper Christian Andrach took the loss despite making 12 saves. Kyle Dennis recorded the win and shutout with three stops.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action next Saturday for its Senior Night against NJAC foe Kean at 7:30 p.m.

Rowan struck early, finding the opener in the 5th minute when Modou Sowe headed along a ball to Ryan Campbell who was waiting at the near post to head it past the keeper.

The Profs doubled their lead at 21:27 after Shane Doherty made a run down the right wing and laid the ball off to Kevin Primich. Primich did the rest, getting the ball on his left food before blasting a curling strike from a few feet inside the 18 to beat the goalie at the far post.

Rutgers-Newark had its best chance to that point in the 29th. Rookie Ahmed Moawad got down the left flank and into the box before cutting it back and getting off a shot. That bid was deflected and fell to classmate Anthony Oliveira just outside the 18 who hit a one-time strike with his left that forced a diving save from the keeper.

Unfortunately, the visitors added a third with less than nine minutes remaining in the period. Doherty played facilitator once again, this time getting down the left wing before fizzing a pass on the ground to Campbell who made it a brace with a one-time shot from the six-yard box that he powered past the goalie.

Rowan tacked on another score in the 76th when Campbell completed his hat trick, beating a defender on the left side of the box before getting off a bullet that found the left-side of the goal.
