HOBOKEN, N.J. (October 2, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team fell in a 1-0 thriller at 19th-ranked Stevens Institute of Technology Wednesday night at the De Baun Athletic Complex in Hoboken.
Trailing 1-0 for 84 minutes, the Scarlet Raiders nearly pulled even when sophomore
Adonis Scotland drew a foul in the box to set up a penalty kick for freshman
George Angelides with 42 seconds to play. Angelides stepped up and put a well-struck shot towards the lower-left corner of the goal, but Stevens goalkeeper Aaron Henry was able to guess correctly and make a fully extended one-handed save to all-but lock up the win for Stevens,
Rutgers-Newark drops to 7-5-1 with the non-conference defeat, while Stevens improves to 10-1-1. The Scarlet Raiders and Ducks are two of the premier programs in the nation separated by just a few miles. Rutgers-Newark has made four NCAA Tournaments in the last five years, advancing to the Elite Eight in 2016 and winning the New Jersey Athletic Conference title in 2017, while Stevens reached the Sweet 16 in 2017 and has won 10 of the last 11 Empire 8 titles.
Rutgers-Newark will return to action Saturday at NJAC foe Rutgers University-Camden looking for a big-time conference road win.
Stevens was able to tally early, going on top 1-0 just 4:37 into the match with the second marker of the season from Haddy Abdelhady following a deflection.
Newark generated a pair of corners in the 20th minute, and freshman
Franco Catania had a pair of late looks, with a bid at the end of the period getting saved by Henry.
Catania put a pair of shots on target with about 30 minutes to play in regulation as the action went end-to-end at a feverish pace during the middle portions of the second half.
The Scarlet Raiders generated a great chance in the 64th minute, but freshman
Anthony Oliveira's header was saved after Catania created the opportunity with some marvelous individual work. Freshman goalkeeper
Christian Andrach made a pair of denials over the next few minutes, and the Scarlet Raiders countered on several occasions but were unable to find the equalizer.
With a little more than five minutes left in regulation, Rutgers-Newark created a trio of excellent chances, the first of which was the closest. Angelides was able to get to a loose ball, but his shot from 30-yards out banged off the post, and moments later, sophomore Joshua Breton Jones saw his shot stopped by Henry. Senior
Victor Navas Jr. had his attempt denied at 85:05 to end the rush, and the two teams would go back-and-forth prior to the penalty kick.
Stevens ended the tightly contested match with a 16-11 margin in shots and a 9-7 edge in shots on target. Andrach made eight saves in the loss, while his counterpart Henry was credited with seven stops. The Ducks held a slim 6-5 lead in corners, and Stevens committed 15 fouls compared to 10 for Rutgers-Newark.
