NEWARK, N.J. (November 14, 2018) – On Saturday and Sunday the Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team will host the semifinals and championship match of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships on Frederick Douglass Field.
The ECAC switched to a national tournament in 2016 from a regional format so 16 teams were selected for the postseason competition on Tuesday and were broken into four pods. The Scarlet Raiders (11-8-1) earned the top seed in pod 3 and will host overall top-seed Drew University (13-6-0) from pod 1, third-seed Wesley College (16-4-1) from pod 4, and fourth-seed William Paterson University (14-7-1) from pod 2 for the weekend.
Drew faces off against Wesley at 5 p.m. while Rutgers-Newark takes on William Paterson at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday with the winners playing for the 2018 ECAC Division III Championship on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children, seniors, and students with ID while all Rutgers-Newark students, staff, and faculty with ID can attend for
FREE.
This is the Raiders seventh trip to ECACs since 2008 and its 11th consecutive postseason berth with appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017. Newark's previous six ECAC experiences came under the regional format in the ECAC Metro/Upstate Championships where Head Coach
Kevin East's side won two titles in 2011 and 2015.
The Scarlet Raiders advanced to the second weekend of this tournament as the victor of pod 3 after defeating #4 Maritime College 5-0 on Saturday and then earning a 4-2 win over #3 Manhattanville College on Sunday.
Rutgers-Newark was led during the 2018 regular season by rookie
Franco Catania who earned a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) honorable mention award after 11 goals and three assists for a team-high 25 points in 15 appearances. Sophomore
