NEWARK, N.J. (November 8, 2018)
– On Saturday and Sunday the Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team will be hosting the first two rounds of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships on Frederick Douglass Field.

The ECAC switched to a national tournament in 2016 from a regional format so 16 teams were selected for the postseason competition on Tuesday and were broken into four pods. The Scarlet Raiders (9-8-1) earned the top seed in pod 3 and will host second-seed Medaille College (12-5-2), third-seed Manhattanville College (12-5-0), and fourth-seed Maritime College (14-5-1) for the weekend.

R-N faces off against Maritime at 11 a.m. while Medaille takes on Manhattanville at 2 p.m. on Saturday with the winners playing for a berth in the semifinals on Sunday at 12 p.m.

Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children, seniors, and students with ID while all Rutgers-Newark students, staff, and faculty with ID can attend for FREE.

This is the Raiders seventh trip to ECACs since 2008 and its 11th consecutive postseason berth with appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017. Newark's previous six ECAC experiences came under the regional format in the ECAC Metro/Upstate Championships where Head Coach Kevin East's side won two titles in 2011 and 2015.

Rutgers-Newark was led in 2018 by rookie Franco Catania who earned a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) honorable mention award after 11 goals and three assists for a team-high 25 points in 15 appearances. Sophomore Joshua Breton-Jones, freshman Ariel Parada, and classmate Anthony Oliveira all netted five scores while Breton-Jones' four assists are tied for squad-best with senior Bryan Rodrigues. Rookie Christian Andrach has had a very strong fall in net with 107 saves, seven shutouts, and a 1.64 goals against average in 17 starts.

The Scarlet Raiders had two matches in relatively recent memory against no. 3 Manhattanville. R-N defeated the Valiants 3-0 in a 2014 regular season contest and then by the same score the next year in the 2015 ECAC Metro/Upstate Championship game. The two sides played no common opponents this fall.

Rutgers-Newark's last match against Maritime College came on Coach East's debut with the program in 2007 as the Raiders emerged victorious in a 4-3 battle. Both sides played CCNY this season and easily handled their opponent with a 14-0 win for R-N and a 5-0 victory for the Privateers.

The Scarlet Raiders have no history and no common opponents this season with no. 2 Medaille.

#2 Medaille College, Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC)
The Mavericks are making their third ECACs appearance with the most recent coming in 2011 when they made it to the title game of the ECAC South Championships.

Medaille is coming off a strong 12-5-2 campaign including an excellent 7-1-1 mark in the AMCC. The Mavericks fell just short of their league's automatic NCAA bid, losing to Penn State-Behrend last weekend in the title game.

Medaille is led offensively by Lachlan Beever who had a tremendous season with 20 goals and three assists to rack up a team-best 43 points. Mitchell Ali also had a great fall, finding the back of the net 12 times and adding a squad-high nine assists for 33 points. Keeper Jonny Pitts made 64 stops over 18 starts while recording eight shutouts and a stellar 0.91 goals against average.

#3 Manhattanville College, Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC Freedom)
The Valiants come into this tournament after one of their best seasons in recent memory with a 12-5-0 overall record and 5-2-0 mark in MAC play. Manhattanville's 12 wins are its most since 2011 and this is the program's first postseason bid since 2015.

Cristian Araujo leads the attack with nine tallies this fall for a team-best 18 points. Marius Nicolaysen (5g, 4a), Pablo Bravo Ollie (4g, 4a), and Cody LaCava (4g, 4a) all feature into a balanced offense while Nico Diaz leads the squad with six assists. Charles Roberts has had a strong season in between the pipes with 66 saves, seven shutouts, and a 0.95 goals against average in 15 starts.

#4 Maritime College, Skyline Conference
The Privateers enter ECACs on the heels of a program-record 14 wins as the team went 14-5-1 and 7-2-1 mark in league action. This is SUNY Maritime's second consecutive trip to the postseason after falling to Rutgers-Camden in the opening round last year.

Parker Gallt topped the Privateers squad with 28 points on a team-leading 10 goals and eight assists. Maritime had a balanced attack with six players recording at least 10 points and Christopher Tavernese (9g, 2a) also reaching the 20 point plateau. Goalkeeper Michael Rodriguez made 18 starts and earned eight clean sheets to go with a 1.04 goals against average while making 64 stops.
