Baseball Ends N.C. Trip with a Doubleheader Split

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (February 24, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team closed its North Carolina trip with a doubleheader against Frostburg State University and the College of New Rochelle this afternoon. In their first contest, the Scarlet Raiders dropped a 13-0 decision to a tough Frostburg State team before bouncing back to defeat CNR, 27-1.

R-N is now 3-2 early in its 2018 campaign while the Bobcats are 5-1 and the Blue Angels move to 0-4.

In the contest against New Rochelle, the offense led the way exploding for 22 hits, 26 RBI, and 27 runs including eight doubles and one home run. Eight different Raiders had multi-hit afternoons but it was senior Anthony Perconte who stole the show. Perconte had a tremendous game going 5-for-5 with four runs, four doubles, and five RBI. Classmate Ross Halkias brought home a game-best six runs while collecting three hits, including a double and two-run shot, and three runs. Seniors Brian Boulineau and Nick Dispenza as well as juniors Dominic and Luke Magliaro each recorded two hits and three RBI.

Rutgers-Newark returns to action on Saturday March 3 when it faces the College of Mount Saint Vincent for a twinbill beginning at noon.

Frostburg State 13, Rutgers-Newark 0
The Scarlet Raiders fell behind early in their first game of the afternoon as the Bobcats strung together three straight hits with two outs, capped by a two RBI double in the first.

Frostburg State duplicated that effort in the second frame, doubling its advantage to 4-0.

The home side continued to add to its advantage in the bottom of the fifth. A two-run blast chased Rosoline before an RBI single made it a three-run frame for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats poured on six more scores in the eighth to take seal a 13-0 win.

R-N was kept in check by a fantastic outing from Frostburg State starter Greg Schneider. Schneider hurled seven shutout frames, allowing just two hits while walking none and striking out 15 batters.

Rutgers-Newark 27, New Rochelle 1
Newark jumped on New Rochelle's starter early and often, racking up six runs on five hits in the first inning. Zucker started things off with a single and four batters later the bases were loaded with one out. Luke Magliaro a streak of four hits in a row with a two-RBI base knock into left. Dispenza made it 5-0 with an RBI single while Boulineau worked a walk to force in the sixth run of the frame.

The Raiders poured on another eight runs in the third inning to put the game out of reach. Perconte and Dispenza each featured heavily in the onslaught with a pair of two-RBI doubles.

R-N continued to extend its advantage from there, tacking on another 13 runs en route to a 27-1 rout.

Sophomore Jason Palmeri earned the win on the hill, tossing five innings while allowing just one unearned run, walking one, and striking out four. Four different relievers combined to finish off the victory.
