NEWARK, N.J. (March 30, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team picked up its first home win of the 2018 season Friday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium as the Scarlet Raiders routed visiting CCNY, 15-4.
The victory snaps a six-game skid for Rutgers-Newark, and the Scarlet Raiders improve to 6-10 ahead of their New Jersey Athletic Conference opener Saturday in Newark against nationally-ranked The College of New Jersey. The doubleheader is set for an 11:30 a.m. start from Riverfront Stadium.
Senior
Brian Boulineau led the Scarlet Raiders, going 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI. Sophomore starter
Jason Palmeri was solid as well, improving to 2-1 with 6.1 innings of work. He was charged with four runs, scattering seven hits and striking out six.
Rutgers-Newark scored three runs in the first and four more in the second and never were threatened in their first home win of the season. In the first, Boulineau doubled home juniors
Ryan Zucker and
Luke Magliaro with a laser to left, and senior
Ross Halkias brought Boulineau later in the frame with a sacrifice fly.
An error allowed the first two runs to cross in the second, and the final two crossed on an opposite field double off the wall from senior
Anthony Perconte.
Newark added one marker in the third on a productive ground ball from
Luke Magliaro, and the Scarlet Raiders pushed across two more in the fourth to go on top 10-0. Sophomore
Connor Clare walked and senior
Justin Marks singled to set the table, with Clare scoring on a fielder's choice and Marks scoring on a throwing error.
After CCNY (5-7) scored two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh, the Scarlet Raiders pushed across a pair of their own. Marks tripled high off the wall in right to drive in one, and he scored on a throwing error to push the Newark lead back to eight (12-4).
Three more runs scored in the eighth inning as Halkias delivered a sacrifice fly, and both Perconte and
Dominic Magliaro had run-scoring singles.
Junior
Timothy Kales threw two flawless innings of relief, striking out three and giving up no hits to close the door.
In addition to Boulineau's four-hit performance, Perconte went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two walks, and Marks was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Sophomore
John Klimowich walked four times, pocketed one hit and scored two runs, while
Luke Magliaro finished 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.
Rutgers-Newark totaled 13 hits in all, drawing 13 walks as well. Zucker, Klimowich and Perconte all drew multiple free passes, with Klimowich and
Luke Magliaro each swiping a pair of bases.
