WAYNE, N.J. (April 13, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team suffered a 19-10 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) loss at William Paterson University Friday afternoon at Jeff Albies Field in Union.
The game was called after the Scarlet Raiders batted in the eighth inning due to darkness.
Rutgers-Newark falls to 1-7 in the NJAC and 9-17 overall, while William Paterson improves to 17-8 overall and 5-3 in the league. The Scarlet Raiders will host NJAC rival and seventh-ranked Rowan University Saturday in Jersey City at Jaroschak Field. The first game is slated for an 11:30 a.m. start.
It was all Scarlet Raiders at the start as the guests scored five times over the first three innings. Senior
Adam Tricarico singled in the first run of the game in senior
Justin Marks who singled with one out, and a fielder's choice brought around senior
Brian Boulineau who pocketed a knock earlier in the frame as well.
Sophomore
JC Ball came through with a one-out two-run single in the top of the second to give the Scarlet Raiders a 4-0 advantage, and a two-out hit from senior
Anthony Perconte in the third pushed the Rutgers-Newark lead to five (5-0).
William Paterson exploded for eight runs in the third inning on six hits and an error, getting a three-run homer from freshman Christopher Liriano to break a 5-5 tie.
The Pioneers tacked on one more in the fourth and seven in the fifth to open a 16-5 lead, with the Scarlet Raider offense pushing across a single tally in the sixth and four more in the seventh.
Junior
Ryan Zucker drove in Ball with a double in the sixth, and senior
Joe Biggiani drove in the first Newark marker in the seventh with a single. Junior
Luke Magliaro cleared the wall in right for a three-run shot in the to cap the Scarlet Raider scoring at 10, and WPU tallied a pair in its half of the seventh for the final.
Rutgers-Newark pounded out 16 hits in the game. Zucker went 3-for-5 with an RBI, Marks went 2-for-4 with two runs, and Boulineau went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Ball had two hits, a run and an RBI, while Magliaro drove in a team-best three runs with his second blast of the season.
Freshman
Michael Matusz suffered the loss for the Scarlet Raiders, falling to 1-2 on the season. Kyle Weiner earned the win for the Pioneers, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings in relief. Weiner improves to 3-1.
