Men's Volleyball Suffers Tough CVC Loss at Ramapo

MAHWAH, N.J. (April 3, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team suffered a tough Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) loss at Ramapo College, 3-2 (25-22, 15-25, 25-16, 20-25, 16-14). The Scarlet Raiders drop to 17-8 (7-6 CVC) while the Roadrunners improve to 8-17 (5-8 CVC).

Rutgers-Newark looks to right the ship before the CVC Tournament with its regular season finale and Senior Night celebration on Thursday in The Golden Dome against NYU at 7 p.m.

Classmate Ricky Crumlish had seven kills and six digs while senior Jalen Sorrell added six kills and five blocks. The opening set was a back-and-forth affair that featured four ties and four lead changes. The visitors claimed an early 3-1 edge but would actually trail for the majority of the period after knotting the score at 12.

Consecutive kills by Pieper and rookie Kyle Loesner brought the Raiders within one at 18-17 but they would get no closer as the Roadrunners held them off to claim a 1-0 advantage.

R-N responded with a strong second stanza. After briefly trailing 11-10, the visitors went on a convincing 11-1 surge that put the set out of reach for Ramapo.

Kills by three different players and an ace by Frank during that run propelled the Scarlet Raiders to a 21-12 lead that they would not relinquish as they cruised to a 25-15 win and evened the match at 1-1.

Ramapo 25, Rutgers-Newark 16
Ramapo came out of the break firing on all cylinders as it won the first five points and built an 11-3 lead that would prove insurmountable for Newark.

While Crumlish and Arce-Cox would each record a pair of kills in the set, the Roadrunners eked out a 25-16 win and regained their advantage for the match.

Rutgers-Newark 25, Ramapo 20
With their backs up against the wall, the Raiders responded. The sides traded the lead three times in the early going but Newark would gain an 11-6 edge, featuring kills from four different players including a pair by Sandy.

The visitors opened up a 17-10 lead on a Sandy block and looked to pull away but Ramapo fought back within two points on multiple occasions.

Leading by a slim 21-19 margin, Arce-Cox and Pieper sandwiched kills around a point by the home team to help secure the 25-20 victory and even the match once more, this time at 2-2.

Ramapo 16, Rutgers-Newark 14
In the penultimate set, neither team gained more than a one-point advantage until late in the stanza.

With the score knotted at 10, R-N won four of the next five points to inch within one of bringing the victory.

Unfortunately, Ramapo rallied at the most crucial time, recording two blocks and two kills while winning five consecutive points to secure the 16-14 win and edge the Raiders, 3-2.
