Men’s Soccer Edges CSI in Double Overtime, 2-1

NEWARK, N.J. (September 24, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's soccer team topped visiting College of Staten Island by a score of 2-1 in double overtime Monday night on Frederick Douglass Field.

With 6:15 left in the second and final overtime period, the CSI goalkeeper was assessed a red card in the box which gave Rutgers-Newark a chance to win the match by converting a penalty kick. Stepping up to take that kick was freshman Franco Catania who calmly found the back of the net with his chance, sending the Scarlet Raiders to their sixth win of the season and third straight.

Rutgers-Newark improves to 6-3-1 overall and will return to action at conference rival Ramapo College Wednesday. CSI sees its four match winning streak come to end as the Dolphins fall to 6-3 on the season.

Since an 0-2 start to the year, Rutgers-Newark has gone 6-1-1 with five shutouts and finished their first home stand of the season 3-0-0 with wins over Albright College, Stockton University and CSI.

After a back-and-forth start that saw CSI generate a shot and corner in the opening moments, it was the Scarlet Raiders who took an early lead when sophomore forward Ariel Parada was able to capitalize on a beautiful long ball from senior back Bryan Rodrigues. On the play, Rodrigues launched a perfect service to Parada streaking down the left side. Parada was able to chase down the pass, enter the box and find the back of the net with a bullet into the right corner from a tough angle. Parada pocketed his fourth goal of the season, while Rodrigues registered his first assist.

The Rodrigues-to-Parada connection ended a lengthy streak without a goal allowed for CSI as the Dolphins entered the match having not allowed a goal for four full games and a total of more than 379 minutes at the time of the Newark tally.

The first half was played over the entire pitch with both sides holding possession and field position for solid chunks of the action. CSI held a slim 5-4 edge in total shots, each side took one corner and the Scarlet Raiders held a 2-0 advantage in shots on frame.

The second half saw some chances for each side. The Dolphins hit a crossbar early, and the Scarlet Raiders just missed on several runs to the goal.

CSI eventually pulled even at 69:36 when Joe Bolella took a pass from Carlos Montesinos at the top of the box, made several jukes as he moved to his left, eventually putting his shot in the lower-left. It was his eighth goal of the season.

The Dolphins ended the match with a 20-10 margin in shots and a 7-5 edge in shots on target, and each side took a total of four corners.

Freshman goalkeeper Christian Andrach made six saves in goal for Rutgers-Newark to pick up his fifth win of the season, while Dolphin goalies combined for three stops.
