Ash & Sencion Score As RU-N Falls To RU-C, 3-2

NEWARK, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders men's soccer team clashed with the Scarlet Raptors this evening at Frederick Douglass Field under the lights in a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference showdown. After the dust settled, Rutgers University-Camden (10-4-1, 3-1-1) prevailed over Rutgers University-Newark (5-8-1, 1-3-1), 3-2.

The Scarlet Raiders were first on the board in this heated NJAC contest as Kadir Karagoz curled in a low cross from the left side of the field which found Juwan Ash open inside the box. Ash redirected the ball into the back of the net to give his squad a 1-0 lead 22 minutes into the game.

Six minutes later, however, the Scarlet Raptors answered. Darnell Brown picked up a loose ball inside the box and snuck it past Andres Medina near post to knot the game up at one. A deep free-kick would set up the Scarlet Raptors' second goal of the game. Enrique Sanchez found Parker Solowey at the back post where he was able to rise above his defender and head it off of the post and in.

Rutgers University-Newark's scoring account wasn't close for the day as they tied the game at two, just five minutes into the second stanza. Once again Karagoz would be the distributor as he sent in a high curling pass to the back post where Miguel Sencion blasted it into the left netting to bring his team level.

As the game wore on, it seemed as if either team could strike at any moment. The Scarlet Raptors were able to combine passes at the top of the 18-yard box when unlocked the Scarlet Raiders' defense and allowed Patrick Grudnik to power his shot past Medina and into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

The Scarlet Raiders outshot the Scarlet Raptors 21(7) to 19(9) while Rutgers University-Camden tallied five corner kicks to just one by Rutgers University-Newark.

Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is a bout against William Paterson University on Wednesday, October 16 at 7:30 pm.
