Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Akinbo, Moy, Capobianco, & Lockett Shine On Senior Night

NEWARK, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders women's volleyball squad hosted City College of NY for senior night at the Golden Dome. Comfort Akinbo, Jessica Moy, Analis Capobianco, and Brione Lockett were all honored before the start of the match. Rutgers University-Newark (17-9) won tonight's match over CCNY (8-7), 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-8).

As a team, the Scarlet Raiders hit .156 while holding CCNY to a .000 hit percentage. Senior outside hitter, Akinbo, led the team with 18 kills on .239 hitting while fellow senior Lockett paced the team with 24 digs. Moy tallied seven kills in the win good for second on the team while Capobianco added six digs and three service aces to her tally.

In the opening set of the match, the Beavers came out strong and surprised the Scarlet Raiders as they would take the opening set 25-23 despite a late surge by Rutgers University-Newark.

Rutgers University-Newark settled into the match in the second set as they opened the game with an 8-0 run. A quick timeout by the Beavers cooled the Scarlet Raiders off enough to allow them to score a pair of points. The Scarlet Raiders wouldn't remain tamed for long as an ace from Dahlia Shoukry and a kill by Alex Rivera propelled their team to a 13-4 lead. Down by 9, the Beavers answered with six unanswered points to cut the lead down to three.  Capobianco would secure a pair of service aces to push her squad back out to a seven-point lead to set up Rivera for the set-winning kill.

As the match wore on the Scarlet Raiders improved on the court and put the Beavers on their heels. Midway through the third set, the women used a 9-0 run to give them a 19-10 lead. Karly Gregoire registered a pair of service aces while Akinbo and Eliana Rivera picked up kills. A series of errors by the Beavers would hand the Scarlet Raiders their second win of the night to give them a 2-1 lead in the match.

The most dominant performance of the evening came in the fourth and final set when the Scarlet Raiders bottled up CCNY's attack and held them to just eight points. Up 10-4, Rutgers University-Newark used an 8-0 run to give themselves an 18-4 lead. The Beavers were unable to claw their way back into the set as the Scarlet Raiders ran away with the match.

Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is a match against Rowan University on Tuesday, October 29 for their final match of the regular season.
