Women's Volleyball Halts Skid With 3-2 Win Over Brooklyn College

BROOKLYN, N.Y. | The Scarlet Raiders women's volleyball program broke their losing skid tonight with a five-set win over non-conference opponents, Brooklyn College. The 3-2 (25-19, 16-25, 17-25, 25-15, 15-10) win boosted Rutgers University-Newark to 11-7 while Brooklyn College dropped to 10-6.

The Scarlet Raiders hit a solid .222 as a team which was highlighted by a 20 kill fourth set. As a team, Brooklyn College hit .156 in the loss. 

Comfort Akinbo tallied a career-high 29 kills in the five-set thriller while hitting a scorching .407 for the match.  Also posting career numbers was Karly Gregoire who tallied 50 assists in the win. Alexa Rivera led the team with 21 digs while added 11 kills, good for second on the team.

In the opening set of the match, both teams traded runs but it was the Scarlet Raiders that was able to burst ahead and take the opening set. Down 16-14 the Scarlet Raiders used a 4-0 to take the lead for good. Akinbo and Jessica Moy both secured a kill while attacking errors by Brooklyn aided the Scarlet Raiders run.  

Brooklyn College held a three-point lead towards the end of the second set before surging to the win with a 6-0 run. Once again in the third set, the Bulldogs led for most of the match to secure the win and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

The Scarlet Raiders had their best set of the match in the fourth set and used a 9-0 run midway through the set to blow the set wide open and take an 18-9 lead. Akinbo accounted for seven of those kills while Brione Lockett picked up a service ace. 

With momentum fully on their side, the Scarlet Raiders went into the fifth set full of confidence. Brooklyn College, however, scored the first two points of the set but the Scarlet Raiders answered with five of their own.  Brooklyn cut the lead down to one, 10-9, after an attacking error by the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers University-Newark took a 14-9 lead before an error brought the score to 14-10. The Scarlet Raiders quickly regrouped and secured the final point to stop their losing streak.

Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is a match on Tuesday, October 8 against Stockton University.
