MADISON, N.J. | The Scarlet Raiders women's basketball team went the distance in their season opener against the Devils and fell 62-57 in overtime. Rutgers University-Newark (0-1) was led by
Louise Ann Borja and
Ebony Odom Barnes with 13 points each.
Dorian Capurso opened the season with a double-double, tallying 10 points and 14 rebounds while also leading the team with four steals.
Hannah Ashby dished out one assist and picked up six points and eight rebounds with
Elisha India Cross leading the team with a pair of assists.
FDU-Florham (1-0) was led by Jayda Bing with 21 points and six rebounds. Jennah Roman led the team with five assists and scored 14 points, good for second-most on the team.Â
The Scarlet Raiders trailed early, 5-3, however, Ebony Odem Barnes sank her first collegiate basket from behind the arc to give her team a 6-5 lead. Rutgers University-Newark was able to keep FDU-Florham at arm's length after Jennah Roman cashed in on a three to bring the first quarter within a point.
Odom Barnes found herself open from range once again and found the bottom of the net to keep her team in the lead. The Devils answered with a three of their own to keep the game within one, however,
Louise Ann Borja stormed down the court and caught a pass from
Dorian Capurso for yet another three-point basket.
Borja stayed hot in the second quarter and hit three straight jumpers which put the Scarlet Raiders up 21-14 with 7:10 remaining in the half. The home squad rallied back and took a 26-25 lead on the back of Neveah Sutton's three-pointer. Once again, Odom Barnes answered with a long-range basket to propel the Scarlet Raiders back into the lead.
Capurso hit a pair from the charity stripe before the half to send her team into the half with a four-point, 29-25, lead.
In the third quarter, the Scarlet Raiders held a slight five-point lead in the early goings. Helen Ishmael brought the game within four before a four-minute dry spell for both teams took hold of the game. Borja broke the scoreless spurt with a three-point shot to put the Scarlet Raiders up 39-32. Â
The Devils clawed back into the game with a surge in the fourth quarter and knotted the game up at 43 at the 4:17 mark. As time began to wind down, the Scarlet Raiders held a two-point lead but FDU-Florham hit a pair of free-throws to send the game into overtime.
Once the game went into overtime, the Devils seemed to have momentum on their side as they jumped out to a 55-52 lead. The Scarlet Raiders struggled to find the bottom of the net in overtime until Capurso hit both of her free-throws to bring the game within six. With the clock against them,
Samiyah Horton cut the lead down to four, however, Bing gave the Devils a seven-point lead again with just 21 seconds remaining in the game.
The Scarlet Raiders came out of a timeout and tossed up one last chance but saw it bounce off of the rim and into the hands of the Devils.Â
Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is their annual Tip-Off Tournament on Friday and Saturday where they will play host to FDU-Florham, Wesleyan University, and Arcadia University.
