NEWARK, N.J. | A season-high 23 points by
Chase Barneys was not enough to overcome an undefeated Stevens Institute of Technology, 62-58, this afternoon at the Golden Dome.
Rutgers University-Newark (4-2) received points from
BJ Honis who finished the game with 10 points, good for second-highest on the team.
David Logan added 8 while
Quincy Rutherford cleaned the boards with a team-high 6 rebounds.
Mike Vick played lock-down defense all game until he foulded out while leading the team with 5 assists.
Stevens Institute (6-0) was led by Spencer Cook despite behind held in check for a majority of the game. Cook finished with a team-high 14 points while Alec DiPietrantonio finished with an 11 point and 15 rebound double-double.
In a low scoring affair the lead flip-flopped for the first 15 minutes of the game until it was knotted at 17. The Ducks were in the bonus which sent them to the line several times down the stretch which allowed them to take a three-point lead into the half.
Stevens held a narrow lead in the second half until Barneys hit a jumper to tie the game up at 31 with 14:05 remaining. With 7:33 Honis cashed in on a jumper to give the Scarlet Raiders a seven-point lead which was their largest of the lead.
The Ducks wouldn't give up as they stifled the Scarlet Raiders on offense and used a 9-0 run to take the lead with just five minutes left in the contest. Barneys caught fire towards the end of the game and hit a three to bring the game level once again at 49. Stevens would catch fire and use another 9-0 run to retake the lead, this time for good.
The Scarlet Raiders made it interesting in the final two minutes getting three-point baskets from Barneys and Honis but ultimately were unable to close the deficit.
Rutgers University-Newark returns to action on Wednesday, December 4 when they travel to Union, NJ to take on Kean University in New Jersey Athletic Conference action.
