Chase Barneys once again led the Scarlet Raiders in scoring to lead his squad past New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foes, Kean University, 71-66.
Rutgers University-Newark (5-2, 2-0) returned to the win column on Wednesday night and remained unbeaten in the NJAC. Barneys led the Scarlet Raiders with 25 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the floor while also converting 11-of-15 from the charity stripe.
Mike Vick added 11 points while
BJ Honis secured 10.
Dante Ralph led the team with 9 rebounds while
Quincy Rutherford dished a team-high three assists.
Kean University (1-6, 0-2) was led by Jailen Jamison with 16 points and two steals while Nate Lyles and Jared Latane each scored 12. Latane grabbed six rebounds while both Jamison and Lyles earned three assists.
Rutherford gave the Scarlet Raiders a six-point lead halfway through the first half with a jumper, however, Jah'mir Miller cut the lead down to three after he cashed in on a three-point basket.
Jared Latane tied the game at 21 with 9:05 remaining in the opening, however, Barneys took hold and wiggled his way to the basket to convert a layup. The Scarlet Raiders closed out the first half on a 15-4 run which saw
Jamir Patterson and
Tyrone Bowens provide crucial points and rebounds.
With an 11-point lead in the second half, both teams went scoreless for two minutes before Barneys found the bottom of the net with a layup. With 6:50 remaining in the game, the Cougars were able to cut the lead down to four on a Kendall Blount three-pointer.
The Scarlet Raiders were able to outlast the Cougars' comeback attempt to secure the NJAC win.
Up next, the men will play host to The College of New Jersey on Saturday at the Golden Dome.
