Quincy Rutherford dropped 24 points on Rutgers University-Newark's bitter New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) rivals, New Jersey City University in the 71-46 point rout at the Golden Dome. The win marks the first over NJCU since the 2014-15 season a game they won, 62-46.
Rutgers University-Newark (7-3, 4-1) picked up their second straight NJAC win tonight. Rutherford scored a season-high 24 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from deep and 9-for-12 from the field.
Chase Barneys followed that with 16 points while also dishing out seven assists.
Mike Vick held Denzel Banks in check all game, holding him to just four points after he entered the game averaging 18.5. Vick collected a team-high eight assists and added five points.
David Logan scored eight points and led the team with five rebounds.
New Jersey City University (4-5, 2-3) suffered their second straight loss tonight and just their first on the road. Nizair Scott led the Gothic Knights with 9 points, shooting 3-for-3 from behind the arc. On the boards, Sam Toney pulled down a team-high six rebounds while adding just one point.
The Gothic Knights were the first on the board after a three-point basket to take a 3-0 lead. Adonius Melvin Jr., hit a pull up jumper to give the Gothic Knights a 5-2 lead. That would be the final time the Gothic Knights held the lead for the remainder of the game. Rutherford hit back-to-back shots to put his team up 6-5 with 15:32 to go in the first half.
Barneys hit one of his free throws which were the lone point during a five minute stretch as defense dominated play. With a 9-5 lead, Rutherford and Barneys combine for three straight three-point baskets to quickly take a 12 point, 20-8, lead.
The Scarlet Raiders continued to build on their lead by shutting down the Gothic Knights' offense and cashing in on the offensive end. Rutherford hit a three with 26 seconds to put his team up 19 headed into the half.
New Jersey City University tallied 30 points in the second half but they were still outscored 36-30 by the Scarlet Raiders. Rutgers University-Newark kept their foot on the pedal and continued to increase their lead despite the Gothic Knights making a push early in the second half.
Barneys pushed the Scarlet Raiders' lead out to 26 with a layup with 13:16 minutes remaining in the game. Quadri Moore cut the lead down to 21, however, the Scarlet Raiders answered with more baskets to increase their lead to 26.
Jamir Patterson made a statement with a tomahawk dunk with 4:36 left before Barneys hit a layup to give the Scarlet Raiders their largest lead of the game at 29. The Scarlet Raiders cruised to their second-largest win of the season and will have a two-week break before returning to action on Tuesday, December 31 at 2:00 in Riverdale, NY.
