BRONX, NY | A 42-point first half propelled the Scarlet Raiders men's basketball team to their third straight win this afternoon at the Peter Jay Sharp Center. The Scarlet Raiders took down the Dolphins of Mount Saint Vincent, 74-58.
Rutgers University-Newark (8-3) shot well as a team, hitting 49.2% (31-63) from the field and 36.4% (8-22) from behind the arc.
BJ Honis led the squad with 14 points in 20 minutes of action and was a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point land.
Chase Barneys added 12 points while
Mike Vick nearly tallied a double-double with 9 points and 9 rebounds.
Tyrone Bowens finished second on the team with six rebounds.
Mount Saint Vincent (3-6) was led by Kalos Evans and Raiquis Harris with 15 points. Evans added a team-high 9 rebounds while Makai Johnson paced the team with four assists.Â
At the midway point in the first half, the Scarlet Raiders held a one-point lead after
Quincy Rutherford converted a shot from behind the arc. The men followed that up with a 17-5 run and limited the Dolphins to just five points over the final five minutes of the opening stanza.Â
In the first half, the Scarlet Raiders converted at a high clip, scoring on 54% of their attempts. Whenever the Dolphins tried to chip away at the lead the Scarlet Raiders hit a big three to push their lead further out. Vick and Honis both hit threes during that scoring stretch which helped aid the Scarlet Raiders to their explosive first-half tally.Â
The Dolphins cut the lead down to three just three minutes into the second half after they opened on an 8-0 run. Barneys was able to stop the skid with a layup which was followed by a Bowens double to bump the Scarlet Raiders back out to a seven-point lead.
Jamir Patterson gave Rutgers University-Newark a double-digit lead with a deep triple.Â
Mount Saint Vincent was unable to muster up another comeback as the Scarlet Raiders suffocated the Dolphins on defense to pick up their third straight win.
Up next for the men is a game on Saturday, January 4 where they will travel to Drew University for another non-conference bout.Â
