Men's Volleyball Sweeps Cairn in CVC Action

NEWARK, N.J. (February 14, 2019) – The Rutgers University-Newark men's volleyball team cruised past visiting Continental Volleyball Conference (CVC) foe Cairn University tonight, 3-0 (25-13, 25-17, 25-15). The Scarlet Raiders improve to 5-3 (2-1 CVC) while the Highlanders drop to 2-8 (1-3 CVC).

Rutgers-Newark was led by freshman Danny Quay who had eight kills while classmate Arvind Kumar, sophomore Kyle Loesner, and sophomore David Mrowko each tallied six. Senior Brendon Frank had a squad-high seven digs and he shared match-best honors of five aces with Loesner. Senior Arnan Romua led the team with 14 assists.

The Raiders return to CVC action on Tuesday night when they host Neumann University at 7 p.m.

In the first set, the Scarlet Raiders got off to a hot start and did not let up. R-N won the first five points of the match including a Nicholas Arce-Cox kill and back-to-back aces from Brendon Frank.

Cairn would pull within 8-5 but that was as close as the visitors would get.

The hosts took 16 of the next 22 points to open a huge 24-11 advantage. Four different Raiders notched  a winner with Losener grabbing three and Arce-Cox producing a pair of aces. Sophomore David Mrowko capped the set with a spike that made it 25-13.

The second stanza was a bit tighter, featuring four ties and four lead changes. Still, the last deadlock came at 12-12.

While the Highlanders managed to keep within striking distance, Rutgers-Newark pulled away with the score at 16-15.

The home squad turned that slim lead into an eight-point gap, reeling off seven consecutive points before ending the game on a 9-2 surge. Three different Raiders generated a kill while Loesner piled on with four aces as they took the set 25-17.

In the final game, Newark again jumped out in front, taking four of the first five points. Still, Cairn hung around and trailed by the same three-point margin late in the stanza.

Leading 16-13, the Scarlet Raiders put away the visitors, winning the next four points before ending the match with another four-point surge to take the stanza 25-15 and the contest 3-0. The hosts capped the night emphatically with three winners by three different players before a Frank ace won the match.

R-N ended the match with an incredibly efficient third set, hitting 16 winners to just two errors for a .452 attacking percentage.
