Offensive Onslaught Propels Baseball Past UMF

Auburndale, FL I The Rutgers University-Newark baseball team cruised past the University of Maine-Farmington this afternoon, taking a 23-0 victory. The Scarlet Raiders even their record at 4-4 while the Beavers fall to 2-4.

Rutgers-Newark featured six players with multiple hits including a trio that racked up three each. Connor Clare compiled three hits, four RBI, and two runs, Luke Magliaro had three hits, three runs, and two RBI, while Ryan Zucker went 3-for-4 with three runs, an RBI, and a walk. Anthony Ricardo tied for a squad-high four RBI as Kevin Tamsula added three RBI in addition to Matt Rypkema and Chris Suleski contributing two RBI apiece.

Casey Hanley started the game and went six scoreless innings to earn the win, allowing just three hits and three walks while striking out four. Danny Reardon and Nicholas Casaleggio combined to finish off the shutout, fanning two more batters and conceding just four more baserunners in three innings.

The Raiders conclude their Florida trip tomorrow at 9:45 a.m. when they take on the Illinois Institute of Technology.

R-N jumped out in front early as the first three runners reached base on a pair of singles and a hit by pitch. Tamsula got the hosts on the board with a sacrifice fly followed quickly by a Clare double into center that scored both Magliaros. Another sac fly, this time by John Klimowich, had the Scarlet Raiders up 4-0 after one inning.

Rutgers-Newark would only pile on from there, tacking on seven scores in the second. Four straight Raiders earned hits as a Zucker single, Dominic Magliaro double, and Luke Magliaro single produced two runs before Tamsula ripped a two-run homer to left, pushing the lead to 8-0. The home side tacked on three more in the frame to build an insurmountable 11-0 gap.

The Raiders added another nine in the third, highlighted by an inside-the-park grand slam off the bat of Ricardo that went deep to left field.

Newark finally capped the scoring with three in the bottom of the eighth as a Kyle Johnson RBI base knock brought home Jamir Ramos to make it 23-0.
