Box Score 2 Kissimmee, FL | Rutgers-Newark started their day with a quality comeback win over SUNY New Paltz, 3-2, followed by a loss to Grinnell College shortly after. The Scarlet Raiders mounted a late-game comeback that was cut short as Grinnell came away with the 5-3 win.
Game 1: Rutgers-Newark 3, SUNY New Paltz 2 (8inn.)
The Scarlet Raiders scored the first run of the game in the second inning after
Sam Morton hit a double which allowed
Sarah Stiehler to collect the rest of the bases as she crossed the dish.
An error in the top of the fourth allowed SUNY New Paltz to stay alive. Blair hit a single RBI which scored Sant from third. The Scarlet Raiders were able to get out of the inning after allowing just one run despite SUNY New Paltz having runners in scoring position.
After both teams went scoreless in the fifth, SUNY New Paltz doubled up their lead in the top of the sixth to take the lead late in the game. Once again the Scarlet Raiders committed an error which led to the SUNY New Paltz run.
Not to be outdone, the Scarlet Raiders came up big in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Brielle Mattiello reached first after looking at four pitches which advanced
Samantha Hoffman, who was walked earlier in the inning, over to second.
Jackie Lara hit the gap with a single to score Hoffman to knot up the game at two and send it to extra innings.
Rutgers-Newark made quick work of SUNY New Paltz in the eighth before three Scarlet Raiders were walked. Morton came to the plate with bases loaded and no outs. Morton waited for her pitch and hit one into open space allowing
Desiree Roman to cross home for the game-winning run.
Game 2: Grinnell 5, Rutgers-Newark 3
Grinnell was first on the board in the second game of the afternoon for the Scarlet Raiders. A lead-off error allowed the scoring runner to safely reach first. Bishop-Parise would move around bases and reach third on a wild pitch. Bishop-Parise put the Pioneers up 1-0 when she crossed home after Litke put the ball in play.
The Pioneers opened the game up in the bottom of the third when they tallied four runs, increasing their lead to 5-0 over the Scarlet Raiders. Jordan hit a two-out grand slam to give Grinnell the large lead.
The Scarlet Raiders finally got on the board in the top of the sixth cutting into Grinnell's lead. Finally in the seventh inning with their backs against the wall, Rutgers-Newark made a last-second push in which they scored a pair before Grinnell was able to secure the last out.
Rutgers-Newark will play in their final pair of Florida games tomorrow starting at 9:00 a.m. before returning home on Saturday.
