Michael Matusz fired six strikeouts and hurled 100 pitches while allowing just one earned run as the Scarlet Raiders defeated the Red Hawks of Montclair University, 6-1. The win boosts the Scarlet Raiders to 8-12, 2-5 NJAC while knocking the Red Hawks down to 10-15, 1-6 NJAC.
Connor Clare had an outstanding afternoon, leading the Scarlet Raiders with three RBI and a pair of hits with four trips to the plate.
Michael Streim tallied two RBI while going 1-for-4 from the dish. Matusz (2-0) allowed three hits in seven innings and walked just four batters.
Jonathan Anderson pitched 7.2 innings and allowed five earned runs and six hits on 119 pitches. Justin Bates had the only multi-hit game for the Red Hawks going 2-for-4.
Clare got the offense started for the Scarlet Raiders with an infield single.
Chris Suleski moved Clare into scoring position with a single to left field, setting up
Kevin Tamsula to load the bases with a single to center. With the bases loaded Streim belted one to left center to bring in both Suleski and Clare to give the Scarlet Raiders an early 2-0 lead.
Rutgers University-Newark added another run in the top of the third when
John Klimowich homered to left field.Â
Montclair finally got on the board in the bottom of the seventh when the Scarlet Raiders committed an error which led to the run.
Rutgers University-Newark used two hits in the top of the eighth to score their three runs to put the game out of reach for the Red Hawks.Â
The Scarlet Raiders will return home tomorrow to take on Montclair at Weequahic Park at 3:30 p.m.Â
