READING, Pa. | After knocking off NJAC opponents Rutgers-Camden yesterday, the Scarlet Raiders traveled back to Pennslyvania to take on Alvernia in a non-conference game. Alvernia totaled 21 runs in the win while holding Rutgers University-Newark to just two.
Tyler Searles (0-5) got the start on the mound and gave up 12 runs on 11 hits while striking out two batters.
Ryan Zucker and
Tommy Scanlon brought in the only runs for the Scarlet Raiders. Zucker went 1-for-4 while Scanlon went 0-for-1.
Alvernia (18-9-1) scored a run in every inning except the third and sixth inning while the Scarlet Raiders got on the board in the top of the eighth. Alvernia scored five runs in the first two innings and that would be all they would need to pick up the win. Alvernia got their opening run via a solo homer before another three-run homer in the second pushed their lead out to five.
John Klimowich immediately put himself in scoring position for Rutgers University-Newark (7-12) with a triple to center field to start the top of the eighth. Scanlon grounded out but not before Klimowich jetted home to give the Scarlet Raiders their first run of the game. Zucker singled to center field to score
Gerardo A. Reyes who reached earlier on a single up the middle to double their total.
Alvernia scored six more runs in the bottom of the eighth to push their total out to 21 to secure the win.
Up next for the Scarlet Raiders is an NJAC bout against Montclair University on Thursday, April 11 in Montclair, NJ.
