CORTLAND, N.Y. | The Scarlet Raiders men's soccer team took on the 11th ranked SUNY Cortland team this afternoon and fell 2-0. Rutgers University-Newark dropped to 0-2 on the year while the Red Dragons improved to 2-0.
The Scarlet Raiders were the first to register a quality attempt in the contest but
Ryan Silva saw his attempt pushed out of danger. Anthony Ruggiero put the Red Dragons on the scoreboard in the 37th minute. Ruggiero capitalized on a backheel pass to blast one past
Andres Medina.
The Red Dragons received a bit of luck on their second goal as the Scarlet Raiders hit the ball into their own net to put SUNY Cortland up 2-0.
Anthony Oliveira nearly cut into the lead but once again Melveney came up with a big save to keep the ball out of the net.
Rutgers-Newark continued to press and tried to cut into the lead but the stout backline of the Red Dragons proved too much. SUNY Cortland nearly increased their lead to 3-0 but Medina was able to stop the shot and keep the score at 2-0.
The men return to action on Wednesday, September 4 where they will host CCNY at 7:30pm.
