NEWARK, N.J. | The women's volleyball team kept on rolling tonight with a New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) victory over their counterparts, Rutgers University-Camden (4-5, 0-1). Rutgers University-Newark (6-3, 1-0) came into tonight on a four-match win streak and extended it to five with a 3-1 (25-20, 25-15, 24-26, 25-23) win on their home court.
The Scarlet Raiders tallied their highest kill total of the match in the opening set, tallying 14 kills on 49 total attacks for a hitting percentage of .102. Play would go back-and-forth as neither team was able to gain control of the match. Down a pair late in the set, 18-16, the Scarlet Raiders used a 5-0 run to flip the script and take a 22-19 lead.
Eliana Rivera picked up a pair of kills during that run.
With the lead in hand, Rutgers-Newark refused to let go as a trio of Scarlet Raiders would secure a kill to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was the Scarlet Raiders' best hitting set of the night, hitting .273 as a team, committing just two errors. Rutgers-Newark came out strong and took a 10-1 lead as the visitors had no answer for
Comfort Akinbo. Akinbo picked her spots and tallied three kills while
Saniyiah Richardson aided with a service ace.
Alexa Rivera used her skill to keep a double-digit lead with a pair of kills. The Scarlet Raptors were unable to regroup and would fall 2-0 in the first conference match of the season.
Not wanting to be shutout to open conference play, Rutgers-Camden used a late push to steal the third set and push the match into a fourth set.
Once again the teams would play long rallies with the score flip-flopping. Reigning NJAC Defensive Player of the Week,
Brione Lockett, was unstoppable in the backline tonight, besting her season-high 27 digs with 34 tonight. With Lockett protecting the back, it allowed
Karly Gregoire to set up her attackers to the tune of 35 assists. Down four points, the Scarlet Raptors stormed back to tie the game up at 23 and it seemed as though the match was destined for a fifth set.
The visitors would suffer a service error while Rivera made no mistake and picked her spot to collect a game-winning ace.
Next up for the Scarlet Raiders is a date with Cairn University on Thursday, September 19 where Rutgers-Newark will put their win streak on the line at 7:00 pm at The Golden Dome.
